Lots of choices! I spent time on Mr. Nussbaum's site because I had never heard of that site. I think the colors and graphics will keep students engaged. I like how it automatically increases challenges based on scores. This will help to challenge higher students. There were many math topics covered in my grade level that I looked into. -Kelly
Many great resources! The Poptropica website will definitely keep students engaged in the game. I could see my students wanting to play this during indoor recess, and it requires them to read options and choose which option is best for their character in the game. It also asks how old the child is, so I imagine it changes the language used based upon age of the student. I like how Fun Brain has stories that students can read as well as many games. I read through one story and was hoping to find comprehension questions at the end, but I did not see any. In my classroom, I would probably choose one story for a particular day and have the students answer a set of questions after, or have students retell what they read. I like how the PrimaryGames website is organized into Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. -Jackie Norton
I spent a while on poptropica and honestly wasnt understanding it. Then I went over to National Geographic sight and really liked it-especially the Animal Jam game. The Fun Brain is great in that it allows for reading online for students which is always great extra practice!
My children enjoy using abcya.com. I love that the games are often created by educators. The site is very user friendly for a child. The categories are: letters, numbers, holiday, strategy, skill. If I have a child who needs additional practice/reinforcement with a particular skill I’ll have them use this site. For example, if a child is struggling with telling time, I would direct them to that area of the site. The games make learning fun, while providing numerous learning options. The telling time component, gives the option to focus on a digital clock or analog clock. As the children change the time on the clock, the background also changes from day to night, which is an excellent feature that helps to make an authentic connection.
Funbrain.com is another great site that I explored. I liked that the math baseball game has the option for two players, allowing children to work together. The site gives the option to set the operation to, addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. You can also browse by grade level, which helps to select skill sets that are appropriate for students. Topics include: games, reading, videos, playground, math zone.
I look forward to further exploring these 10 Free Online Educational Game Sites. I plan to use many of these sites with my students & my own four children!
I found many of these sites to be great resources to use with my own children as well as the kids at school. I know that the Kindergarten students at my school use abcya.com daily and I always wondered what was on there, because they love it so much. I was happy to see they had keyboarding and it was fairly good for grade I looked at. I also found National Geographic site to be full of awesome stuff like sorting recyclables. Very cool. PBS kids was good too, because I think it engages students with the characters and bright and fun colors! I agree with Jill on Poptropica....I didn't fully get it either. I spent some time on it and felt it took too long to figure out, so I gave up.
There is so much material to pick from that is good and user friendly if something is confusing no need to take the time to figure it out. I am glad you found the other sites helpful.
