Various Games
https://www.learninggamesforkids.com This site has all kinds of educational games, it even includes songs. Please take some time to explore the site pick 2 activities that you would use in your class . Explain the benefits of these activities.
I teach second grade and I enjoyed going through the lessons and activities for compound words and analogies. I liked the graphics for the compound words. It was good for the visual learners because it displayed the word in two parts using two different colors. The lesson spoke slowly, clearly and gave many examples with the definition. I like how they illustrated the definition with pictures. The final activity had a sentence on a board with 3-4 compound words and I liked how they asked you to identify the compound words. This would be great to use on my smart board and have students come and underline the compound words. It would go along well with the spelling list that covers compound words.
ReplyDeleteThe analogy lessons and activities were good as well. I think this is a tough concept for seven year olds, so the graphics and visuals were great. They gave the definition of an analogy and strategies for how to identify the relationship between the two words in an analogy. I would use the game as a follow up and I liked that it gave choices for answers and had different levels so that the stronger students could keep going. I would use this on the smart board or pair students up with a buddy and do this on an iPad. The stronger readers could us it as an independent activity.
I am glad you found this helpful and there was different levels for the kids in your class.
DeleteI really would like to use the short vowel lessons song. I am concentrating on middle vowel sounds with my first graders and the more they hear it especially in song the more it will reinforce this phonemic awareness skill.
ReplyDeleteI also am pretty impressed by the game - typing adventure. The most valuable class I ever took was a typing class and to have these skills addressed through a game so early on is amazing! I think the earlier a student is exposed to this type of practice the better of they will be in school especially with all the computers now days. Most assignments are completed on the computer and then even handed in electronically.

I agree typing is a very important skill that is definitely needed in todays world. We know that the earlier that kids are exposed to this the better. I never took typing and boy was I sorry. Glad you found this site helpful.
DeleteIn my second grade classroom, I would like to use the game Which one: choose the correct type of noun. This game shows a noun and students have to choose which type of noun it is. Parts of speech are important for students to learn, and our curriculum currently has a focus on the types of nouns. I think that this game is a great way to reinforce the concept of plural nouns, singular nouns, pronouns, and proper nouns. The curriculum in my classroom focuses on one convention per week, and bringing in games that reinforce these skills constantly will allow students to master them throughout the school year.
ReplyDeleteI like how the math games are broken up by grade level. In second grade math, there are many games that I would use in my classroom. One in particular that I liked was Money LetterFall. This game benefits students who can't grasp the names of coins in our currency. It is a fun way for students to learn what each coin is and how to spell the names of the coins. This is a tricky topic for second graders, and they need to be able to identify the coins before they are able to solve math problems with them. -Jackie Norton
Money is a difficult topic for kids. There are no penny candy stores around where kids get to practice using coins. Even in stores when they are told what to give for change some clerks have difficulty. Money is an important skill that kids need to know. using games is a great way to teach the concept.
DeleteThanks for suggesting the Which One game. This would also be a helpful game in a third grade classroom. Great review of plural nouns, singular nouns, pronouns, and proper nouns. As a follow up activity I plan to have students create illustrations for singular & plural nouns.
DeleteWhat a great follow up activity. It will be interesting to see what the kids come up with.
DeleteI liked the third grade game titled, Geometry Word-O-Rama (located under the Math Games tab). The host of the game show is a humorous penguin, that I know the students will love. The penguin reads a question for the students to answer, there is also text provided of the question. I like that the children can hear & see the question. The children have four answer choices to select from. Students can place the cursor over an answer choice, and the word will be read aloud for them. When the children select the correct answer, the penguin provides praise & the audience claps. I would definitely recommend this game, it’s a fun way for kids to practice their math vocabulary!
ReplyDeleteI found an activity under the US State Games that would be beneficial for third grade students to play. I selected the state of Massachusetts, then the game titled Speedy Speller. The game begins with a sentence being read aloud for students, “Boston, the capital of Massachusetts is Boston.” Students then need to type the word Boston & hit enter. The children have the option to hear the entire sentence repeated, or just the word to be typed. I love that the children are learning important facts about the state in which they live while also building, vocabulary, writing, spelling and language arts skills.
I am so glad you found something that you found helpful for your class. The kids will have a great time with both games.
DeleteI thought the cup stacking game was a fun twist on learning to type. It was slightly confusing due to the fact that they printed uppercase letters on the cups and it allowed you to type lowercase letters, but other than that I thought my students would enjoy it. The benefits would be to teach keyboarding skills and increase speed with typing. I also thought the Changes- Science Rap was great. I would not incorporate this into my learning since I do not teach science, but if I were a science teacher this would be a fun video to share with students. The benefit to showing this video would be to teach kids the changes in matter of various things in our everyday lives.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you were able to use the cup stacking game. Please pass the science video to a colleague that is the best part of taking courses if you can't use something hopefully someone else can.
